IP ratings – what are they?
When choosing a waterproof phone it’s important to consider the IP (Ingress Protection Rating), these are international ratings that are applied to electrical products.
These are normally in the form of IP##, where the #’s refer to numbers. The first number being the level of dust resistance (6 is max) and the second referring to water resistance (8 is max). For more information on IP ratings check out OUR PAGE. Most of the phones we focus on have an IP rating indiciating a water resistance of at least 4 (resistant to splashing) all the way up to 8 (resistance to submersion over 1m)
How are waterproof smartphone made waterproof
There are a number of companies, most notably HzO and P2i who work with electronics companies to make the phones waterproof, the secret to this is the coating of all electronic parts in a water-repelling material that is thin enough to enable the phone to function as normal but thick enough to prevent liquids seeping through.
Technically this could be done with anything, in the video below another of the waterproofing companies (Liquipel) demonstrate submerging a phone in water and even the effect water has on a Kleenex that has been coated.

What is the best waterproof smartphone?
This is not an easy question and really depends on what you’re looking for, do you want to be able to take high quality photos, or would you rather have a top of the range smartphone with all the functionality that comes with it, alternavitely price may be your buggest consideration. Check out our comparison table and guide for a full review of all the waterproof smartphones currently on the market.
If you simply want a budget phone that is waterproof and that you can call and text with, then the Nokia 3720 can be bought for a little over $100 on amazon without the need for a contract, this makes it a great second phone for taking to the beach or while doing adventure sports, the main downside is the fairly limited 54 IP raitng meaning it will be fine with splashes but won’t survive being submerged.
If you’re a keen photographer and want to be able to take high quality photos with a phone that’s waterproof then the Sony Xperia Z1 is the phone for you, with a decent processor and memory as well as a simply staggering 20MB camera this can rival any non waterproof phone on photo quality. Out of all the waterproof phones this is also the most waterproof with an IP rating of 68 (maximum) meaning it can withstand being submerged at more than 1m.
If you want an all round great waterproof smartphone, you should look at a variation on one of the best phones on the market the Samsung Galaxy S4. Samsung have recently released the samsung Galaxy S4 active, this is slightly different to the standard S4 as the camera is only 8MB (rather than 13MB) and there have been some cosmetic changes to the buttons in order to make it waterproof but apart from this it’s still the same great internals.
If we had to choose a winner we’d definitely go with the Galaxy S4 Active, cosmetically it looks great and can compete with any of the other top end smart phones on performance. The 8MB camera might be less than the 13MB on the standard S4 but is certainly still sufficient for taking decent photo’s (the iphone 5S also has a 8MB camera), this is a great phone and one we’d highly recommend even if it wasn’t waterproof. The waterproofing is the cherry on top of an already great phone, especially as it has an IP rating of 67 meaning it can withstand being submerged at a depth of up to 1m.
In addition to waterproof smartphones, we’re starting to also see some waterproof tablets being released, notably the Xperia tablet Z and the ‘Element’ android table both of which have an IP rating of 57 so are suitable for submerging up to 1m in depth.
Waterproof smartphone cases come in many different shapes and sizes, depending on your phone you may need to shop around however we’d certainly recommend lifeproof cases, lifeproof make waterproof and shock proof cases for most major phones.
